Ep68: A Conversation with Pamela Slim, author of Escape from Cubicle Nation
Tuesday Jul 15, 2014
Tuesday Jul 15, 2014
When I started down the entrepreneurial path, one of the
first books I turned to was Pamela Slim’s “Escape from Cubicle Nation.” I
wasn’t necessarily escaping from a cubicle; rather, the book captured the spirit of adventure I was feeling and provided
a roadmap for action in those early days.
While Pamela is a self-proclaimed extrovert, she has
insights and wisdom that will give even the most introverted among us food for
thought. Pamela is an award-winning author, business coach and speaker. In 2005, she started the Escape from Cubicle Nation blog,
which is now one of the top career and business blogs on the web.
Pamela's first book, “Escape from Cubicle Nation: From Corporate Prisoner to Thriving Entrepreneur” was released in Spring, 2009 and won Best Small Business/Entrepreneur Book of 2009 by 800 CEO Read. Her new book, “Body of Work,” gives a fresh perspective on the skills required in the new world of work for people in all work modes, from corporate to non-profit to small business.
In our wide-ranging conversation, we discuss what we introverts need to know about our essential selves and social selves; how a niche leads to sustainability; how to ask for support; and what we can do if we suffer from success dysmorphia.

Our conversation includes tips on self-promotion based on her experiences as a writer, what she's learned from writing "The Introvert's Way," and why people who don't realize you're an introvert might think you're a b-i-t-c-h!
In addition to “The Introvert’s Way,” Sophia is author of "The Yankee Chick's Survival Guide to Texas" and co-author of "The Making of Dr. Phil: The Straight-Talking True Story of Everyone's Favorite Therapist" and "I Can Still Laugh: Stories of Inspiration and Hope from Individuals Living with Alzheimer's."

Finding Your Authentic Presence with Jonathan Bender

Comedians often highlight the absurd truths in society, and introvert - yes, introvert - Jerry Seinfeld is especially skilled at shining the light on our contradictory natures. Here's what he has to say about public speaking: "According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy." The fear of public speaking is called Glossophobia, which comes from the Greek glōssa, meaning tongue, and phobos, fear or dread. My guest for this podcast has dedicated his business to changing the way people - especially introverts and glossophobes - think about themselves and being on stage and in the spotlight. Jonathan Bender, founder of WholeSpeak, is a professional speaker, coach, actor, theater director, writer, and self-proclaimed introvert. He is passionate about helping introverts become strong speakers who actually feel comfortable in front of large groups. His passion comes through loud and clear during this conversation, as we talk about
- The reasons introverts can feel empowered by being on the stage
- The five "keys to confidence" in public speaking
- How to turn fear into freedom
- How introverts can be more naturally expressive

Discovering Your Personal Brand with Peg Marckworth
Friday Feb 03, 2012
Friday Feb 03, 2012
It's ironic that I'm posting a podcast on personal branding just a few days before the biggest commercial extravaganza of the year, the Super Bowl. Most people think the elements they see in commercials represent the product's brand: its logo, colors, tagline and music are all tangible ways the brand is expressed. But what's at the heart of the brand is none of those things; it's really about the feelings that are aroused through the combination of those elements. This is valuable information for the introvert who wants to discover his or her personal brand. My guest is Peg Marckworth, principal of Marckworth Associates. She creates brands for companies that set them apart from the competition and catch the attention of the right clients. We focus on the fundamentals of discovering your personal brand, including:
- What it means to define your personal brand
- Why saying that you deliver "excellence" isn't enough
- The good news for introverts and self-promotion
- An interesting lesson in branding from "America's Next Top Model"
- What's involved in the branding process
