Over the past few years, the conversation about what it means to be a leader has expanded to include traits we might not normally associate with traditional leadership. People tend to see a natural leader as someone with charisma and an outgoing, social energy. And yet, more is being written about the style of leadership that is more behind the scenes, observant and reflective. This has turned our attention to the introverted leader, the one who radiates a confidence that comes from within.
To learn more about how introvert strengths contribute to effective leadership, I’m joined by Jennifer B. Kahnweiler, Ph.D., Certified Speaking Professional. Her bestselling book The Introverted Leader: Building on Your Quiet Strength has achieved widespread appeal and has been translated into multiple languages.
Her latest book, Quiet Influence: The Introvert's Guide to Making A Difference, will be released on April 15, 2013, and is currently available for pre-sale on Amazon.com and Barnes&Noble.com.

How does an introvert wind up leading a large networking organization, hosting a nationally syndicated radio program and running her own company? Lots of energy, vision and taking care of business - most importantly, the business of taking care of herself. Does the idea of standing up in front of a group of people and having to think on your feet, well, freak you out a little? Or does not knowing what to expect make you just a wee bit uncomfortable? My guest today is a friend, colleague and co-conspirator who has helped me take steps to increase my confidence in these situations and more. Leif Hansen is an experienced coach, seasoned facilitator, and creator of innovative workshops. His workshops have been featured internationally, including NBC's Today Show. In our conversation today, Leif and I talk about how the principles of improvisation can improve your personal and professional relationships, and how it can get us unstuck when we introverts get too much in our heads. We cover how to fail fast, build trust in yourself and get over trying to look good in favor of being authentic. And listen carefully... we include a special offer for our Jan. 19, 2011 "Improv for Introverts" workshop in Seattle!

There is an emerging field called Biomimicry, which is a new discipline that studies nature's best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems. The central premise is that nature, which is imaginative by necessity, has already solved many of the problems we are grappling with. Animals, plants, and microbes are the skillful engineers. They have found what works, what is appropriate, and most important, what lasts here on Earth. The idea of looking to our four-legged friends for inspiration and information is very familiar to my guest today, who’s going to share with us her perspective on leadership based on more than 35 years of studying animal behavior.
Rachel Dexheimer of EquiSpire Coaching is a powerful and dynamic coach, speaker and author who works with professionals looking for the edge in leadership development. During this podcast interview, we talk about her emerging perspective on leadership and entrepreneurship, including:
- How a dream spurred her to transition from corporate to coaching
- What we can learn from animals about getting out of our heads
- What introverts can find by going inside, in addition to energy
- Why power and control aren't all they're cracked up to be
